Why athletes need control, not just more range

For years, mobility has been reduced to stretching routines, held positions or “flexibility” sessions. However, having more range of motion does not necessarily mean moving better.
Many seemingly “mobile” athletes continue to have pain, technical limitations, or recurring injuries. The problem is not always a lack of flexibility. Many times it is the lack of control.
Real mobility is not just about achieving a position. It consists of being able to control that position under load, speed and fatigue.
Flexibility refers to the passive ability of a tissue to allow movement. Mobility, on the other hand, involves actively producing and controlling movement. Requires:

  • strength
  • coordination
  • stability
  • motor control
  • ability to absorb and produce forces

That's why an athlete can have a lot of range and still move poorly if they can't control that range during the actual movement.
Stretching can be useful in certain contexts, especially to reduce feelings of stiffness or facilitate relaxation. The problem appears when they become the only strategy to improve movement or prevent injuries.
Gaining passive range without developing strength or stability in those positions has little transfer to performance. The body doesn't just need “more space.” You need to know how to use it.
That's why many times the best way to improve mobility is to develop strength in broad ranges and specific positions. At CDA Perform we use:

  • isometric
  • unilateral work
  • loaded positions
  • joint control
  • integrated breathing
  • dynamic work

Breathing also directly influences mobility. The position of the rib cage and pelvis determines how we produce and distribute forces. Many times improving a position does not require forcing more range, but rather reorganizing the body better.

At CDA Perform, mobility is not worked on as an isolated session. It is integrated into:

  • warm-ups
  • strength
  • locomotion
  • control work
  • dynamic tasks

We are not looking for perfect movements or extreme postures. We look for athletes capable of moving efficiently, producing force and tolerating the real demands of the sport.
Because useful mobility is not what you can show in a static position.
It is what you can control when the body accelerates, brakes, jumps or is fatigued.
